Here applicants can find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions that we receive each year:
What is the official language of the MSc. International Management (MIM)?
The programme is taught entirely in English, however, throughout the programme you may attend additional courses to improve your Portuguese language skills.
If my mother tongue is not English will I have to take TOEFL or IELTS?
TOEFL and IELTS are not always required; however, applicants must be able to demonstrate a good command of oral English, and sufficient comprehension and written skills during their application. Previous studies in English or Business English courses taken may exempt candidates from taking the TOEFL or IELTS. In the case that you possess any certificates it is recommended that you attach them to your application.
Do I need to know Portuguese?
Knowledge of Portuguese is not a requirement for entry onto MIM. However, being open to learn the language will facilitate your day-to-day life in Lisbon and provide you with more possibilities if you wish to work or take part in internships while you study.
Are there any scholarships available for international students?
Unfortunately we do not offer any scholarships or grants for this course. Students must cover their living costs (approx. 650€/month) themselves.
Is a "study abroad" period compulsory?
No but we strongly recommend it. This is the best way to improve your international experience and an additional learning opportunity in an international business school.
What support exists for those who wish to study abroad during MIM?
Students are provided with the necessary information to make their choices and support for their applications by the IBS International Office Manager, ISCTE-IUL International Relations Office with some additional support being provided by the MIM programme manager.
What is a Double Degree?
A double degree is the award of two master’s titles from two institutions and may be completed in as little as two academic years (although this depends on each individual agreement).
In order to receive a Double Degree award students sign a contract that outlines a learning track that must be completed within a specified timeframe. Students will spend a minimum of the first year (or semester) at ISCTE-IUL and must successfully complete the study plan set out for them. They will then be required to spend a semester or full academic year abroad at one of our partner universities, where they will complete their studies. Diplomas will be awarded after the student has successfully fulfilled all requirements laid out in the respective study plans for both institutions and defended their final project(s) or dissertation(s).
When is the deadline for applying to the Master's Programme?
The application process is carried out on a rolling basis and the deadline will depend on which round you decide to apply in.
I haven't received my Bachelor's degree yet. Can I submit it later?
Applications may be accepted before the applicant has received their Bachelor's or any equivalent degree as long as it is due to be awarded before the beginning of the Programme. In these cases, an application may be accepted on the condition that proof of the conclusion of studies is provided.
What is the difference between your programme and an MBA programme?
The MSc. International Management differs from an MBA programme in the fact that professional experience is values but not a prerequisite for entry to the programme. MIM intends to provide the students with hands-on skills and the necessary tools in international business and management preparing you to work in a large variety of different positions or pursue an international career.
Do I have to submit GMAT results?
If you present your GMAT score, it will be taken into consideration and may enhance the value of your application. GMAT may be required in certain cases according to your academic background and level of professional experience. If in doubt, please check with the Programme Director.
Will I need to present certified copies of my Diploma and transcripts of grades?
Yes. After receiving your letter of acceptance, the enrolment process requires new students to send in certified copies of documents like the Bachelor's degree certificate and your study transcripts from the institution which issued the certificate or diploma.
Are there employment possibilities in Portugal for international students?
Students from a European Union member state do not require work permits in order to work in Portugal and have better chances of finding a job if they possess some Portuguese language skills. Students from outside the European Union holding a study visa, please check the conditions under which you may work when the visa is issued. Further information can be found on the website for the Portuguese Service for foreigners and border affairs SEF (Serviço do Estrangeiro e das Fronteiras).
Which professional opportunities do I have after graduation?
Graduate students generally have excellent job opportunities, as they have gathered a rich background in both business and management skills. Fields like international management and business do require large number of post-graduate professionals.
Nevertheless, we believe that your individual chances largely depend on how much personal effort you invest in your studies and the additional qualifications and skills you have acquired rather than just a Master's degree.
I do not possess a degree in Business or in Economics. Do I still have a chance to enrol in the MIM Programme?
Yes. Students with different backgrounds are admitted to the programme if they have good results in their previous studies and/or professional experience. In these cases a GMAT score of 500+ or the attendance of preparatory courses at the beginning of September may be required as a condition of enrolment by the course director.
Can you help me to find accommodation ready for my arrival?
Yes, ISCTE Business School students may stay at the Professor José Pinto Peixoto residence where students can rent a room from approx. 200€/month (prices vary depending on the type of room). Please go to "Facilities" and have a look at the pictures, find more information and download the residence brochure.
It you prefer staying in private accommodation, once you have been accepted you may contact MIM office for some recommended websites for student accommodation within Lisbon.
