The Academy of Business in Society (ABIS)


ISCTE Business School is the only Portuguese business school accepted as a member of The Academy of Business in Society (ABIS), which is a unique alliance of top international business schools, academic institutions and companies.

ABIS members include leading business schools across Europe, South Africa and New Zealand and international companies and organisations that, with the support of the European Commission, are committed to integrating business in society issues into the heart of business theory and practice in Europe.

ABIS activities are based on three pillars:

  • Research and Knowledge Development: ABIS is the European reference network for interdisciplinary research on corporate responsibility, based on a unique partnership model to create a sound, accessible and business-relevant body of knowledge.
  • Education and Learning: ABIS works collaboratively with companies and academic institutions to inform and reshape education programmes, placing corporate responsibility at the core of business education.
  • Training and Leadership: ABIS supports a multi-stakeholder learning network to identify and deliver programmes designed to enhance the competencies required by mainstream professionals in the area of corporate responsibility.

EuropeanFoundation for Management Development (EFMD)


ISCTE Business School belongs to the select  group of  business schools in Portugal accepted as members of EFMD - European Foundation for Management Development. 

EFMD is an international organisation with members from the academic, business, public and consulting sectors present in 75 countries. EFMD provides a unique forum for information, research, networking and debate on innovation and best practices in management development.

EFMD reflects a dynamic, relevant and diverse network of organisations that share a common goal of developing leaders and managers of high quality and socially responsible. In this context, EFMD has over 30 years experience in coordinating projects and activities that promote an active dialogue and exchange of experiences between companies and academic organisations.

Globally ResponsibleLeadership Initiative (GRLI)

ISCTE Business School was accepted, as a first Business School in Portugal, to GRLI - Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative.   ISCTE Business School was the  first Business School in Portugal to be accepted into GRLI - Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative.

The Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative (GRLI) is the largest community of businesses and business schools/learning institutions uniquely focused on developing a “new” generation of globally responsible leaders. To this end, we are challenging the issues company face in the 21st Century, the mission of business schools/learning institutions and the process of cultural change in organisations. 

GRLI is a co-convenor, a member of the Steering Committee and an active supporter of the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME). We believe that joining GRLI will further ISCTE Business School’s ongoing efforts to comply with its mission to contribute to the development of knowledge and management practices, as well as prepare and develop managers and leaders with the capacity to create a positive impact on the organisations and society in today's globalised world.

Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME)

ISCTE Business School was accepted as a member of PRME on February 2011. As an institution dedicated to creating ethical, effective and holistic leaders for the 21st Century, we not only remain committed to integrating the Principles of Responsible Management Education throughout all our institutions, but hope to help lead the way in developing new ways of teaching the competencies needed in the ever-evolving, ever more complex global business environment of the 21st Century.     

The Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) is a United Nations Global Compact sponsored initiative with the mission to inspire and champion responsible management education, research and leadership globally. The Six Principles of PRME are inspired by internationally accepted values, such as the Ten Principles of the Global Compact. They seek to establish a process of continuous improvement among institutions of management education in order to develop a new generation of business leaders capable of managing the complex challenges faced by business and society in the 21st century. Currently, over 450 signatories have joined PRME representing 80 countries. PRME’s Steering Committee is comprised of global and specialised associations.

The International Trade and Forfaiting Association (ITFA) is the worldwide trade association for companies, financial institutions and intermediaries engaged in trade and the origination, structuring, risk mitigation and distribution of trade debt. ITFA also represents the wider trade finance syndication and secondary market for trade assets. ITFA prides itself in being the voice of the secondary market for trade finance, whilst also focusing on matters that are relevant to the whole trade finance spectrum. 

ITFA presently has more than 165 members, located in over 40 different countries. These are classified under a variety of business sectors, with the most predominant being the banking industry. Others include forfaiting, insurance underwriters, law firms as well as other institutions having a business interest in the areas of Trade Finance and Forfaiting.
