The MSc in Management of Services and Technology (MMST) ranked 18º, in its category, among the Top Best Masters Programmes, in Western Europe, in 2016/2017.
Director: João Vilas-Boas
The Master in Management of Services and Technology (MMST) is an unique advanced educational programme in Technology and Operations Management (TOM) that focuses on both industry and service domains. This programme aims at developing modern, updated, proactive, accountable and socially responsible managers, specifically focused on business operations. Graduates are prepared to excel, to lead, to learn and to become ethical (intra/)entrepreneurs in any international arena. They might also pursue a career in research by attending the PhD of this line of studies in TOM, where three independent cycles of studies interact and are integrated to extend the previous one.
The MMST is designed to address complex problems that might arise within the departmental domains or from the interfaces of functional areas. These problem-situations require integrated solutions and concern both product – i.e. goods and services – and business process innovation. Therefore, Students are educated to build up rich cooperative solutions in both transdisciplinary and multicultural teams, despite also developing the ability to work and research in an autonomous way with rigour. Furthermore, managing both step change and continuous improvement is part of the day-to-day expectations of our graduates in order to pursue organisational excellence.
The Master in Management of Services and Technology values the know-how coming from the business community by implementing curriculum development activities that aim at closing the critical gap between the real world and the academy (vide). On the other hand, the MMST is also concerned with the diffusion of both research findings and knowledge from the academy by means of its students, trainees and graduates.
Finally, the programme promotes both students and its own growth, by continuous integration in national and international communities, by networking and by proactive communication. Thus, both personal and institutional relations are pursued by using the established mechanisms, institutional support, and purposefully developed effective practices, in order to improve the positioning in the national and international arenas. The MMST has currently two double degrees, one with the Università degli Studi di Palermo and, the other one, with the KEDGE Business School. Two internships in Germany are also available.
Professional opportunities for the graduates
Professional opportunities are arranged around the following areas:
i) Operations (i.e. industry and services), logistics and supply chain management (SCM), which consolidates the 1rst degree in Industrial & Logistics Management (ISCTE-IUL), leverages the potential of candidates with a general management degree or positions into the business context a candidate from a natural sciences background; thus, the resulting graduates are competent to occupy job positions in these areas.
ii) Innovation and technology, either by participating in, or leading teams, or by defining strategies for the employers, or even by designing applications to gather funding (e.g. H2020). Becoming a much more realistic and informed (intra/)entrepreneur is also an expected outcome for the candidates.
Moreover, consultancy jobs have been common among our graduates despite, they are also prepared to develop themselves as professional entrepreneurs. In consultancy, our graduates have been assuming important job positions in the IS/IT domain and also, as business analysts.
The Careers Service of ISCTE-IUL shows evidence that the MMST graduates are fully employed. A few students, even, start acting as professionals before finishing the 1rst year of the programme. In addition to the local market, our graduates work all around the world.
ISCTE Business School has a great tradition of teaching in field of Management:
- The faculty of ISCTE Business School have authored more than 100 books in different management disciplines, many of which are now required reading at other Portuguese universities;
- There is a close working relationship between students and faculty;

Why choose the MSc in Management of Services and Techonology?
Testimonial of Comendador Agostinho Silva
Acknowledgment is due to Engenheiro Agostinho Silva, who is a Member of the Board of Administration of Grupo CEI/Zipor, among other top management positions, for his public suport of the MMST. Engº Agostinho Silva was also awarded the honour of Comendador da Ordem do Mérito Empresarial, Classe do Mérito Industrial, by His Excellence The President of the Republic of Portugal.
«When I was invited to express my opinion about the MSc in Management of Services and Technology (MMST), I decided that, first of all, I would only pronounce myself if, after a careful evaluation, I was led to the conclusion that there was a match between my values, my believes, my expectations and both the proposal and practice of the MMST.
In fact, the MMST mission («…fully committed to help its students succeed») brings in a concern with the students together with a winning mindset. Moreover, it stablishes the targets as high as required to excel the competition, which is in line with my positioning as a businessman. Moreover, I fully agree with the requirements for «accountable and socially responsible managers», since enterprises are part of the society and so, they must take into account the impact of their actions, not only in economy, but also in the environment and in the community. I am also very pleased with the development of an entrepreneurial attitude oriented towards the external environment by following an international standpoint. In addition, I could not agree more with the need for including the viewpoints of the practitioner, in order to identify useful problems requiring «rich cooperative solutions». These should be designed by «both transdisciplinary and multicultural teams» without concerns for religion, nationality or race, mostly working in the «interfaces of functional areas», despite I strongly recognise the need for specialists, driven by those teams. Finally, I would like to stress my total agreement with the need for collaborative networks as a means to overcome the scarcity of resources in SMEs and to achieve a significant competitive level of economies of both scope and scale in the global arena. To sum up, I am happy to publicly state my full agreement with the MMST principles, as summarised in its value proposition. I will now focus on the MMST pursued practice.
The MMST records show evidence of seminars from top speakers – e.g. Standardization & Certification in International Commerce, Challenging Sustainability Practices in Business Management, Global Operations in Replenishment, Business Models for the Tooling Industry, Patents and Industrial Property, Stock outs in Retail of FMCG, etc. – and also of relevant study visits – e.g. JERO, SOLANCIS, RENAULT Cacia, BOSCH, Autoeuropa, RESILEI, MATCERAMICA, PETROGAL Refinery, REPSOL polymers, SINES Seaport, etc. These are relevant activities to bring in knowledge from the field, which illustrate examples of the implementation of the value proposition. By revisiting the MMST activities one might also see the presence in important international forums of Operations Management such as the EurOMA conference and the international symposium of the Institute for Manufacturing (University of Cambridge, UK), as well as, the two double degrees with Palermo and Kedge that show a clear trend to the international arena, as confirmed by the positioning in the 20th place of the Eduniversal ranking. Indeed, the MMST practice shows an adequate implementation trend towards its value proposal. In conclusion, I believe that the MMST is a programme that provides a fair balance of competencies in entrepreneurship, logistics, operations management, supply chain and the market requirements. This «package» is completed by strategy and sustainability topics and, supported by courses in information systems, capital appraisal, project management and simulation, among others. Moreover, an important set of activities complementary to the curriculum are in place to bring in the practitioner knowledge and so, promote the adjustment of the student’s mind-set to the real-world, sometimes in the international arena. These also help to adjust the programme syllabus by providing updated key business information and so, to improve employability by reducing the gap between Academy and Industry. Thus, I am pleased to congratulate all the MMST students for their choice, the ISCTE Business School for having such a programme – targeting the education of modern proactive operations managers – and Prof João Vilas-Boas for his vision, leadership and successful management of the MMST.»
Testimonial of Engenheiro Jorge Gabriel
Acknowledgment is due to Engenheiro Jorge Gabriel, Member of the Board of Administration of Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD), ex-Advisor to the Secretary of State for Entrepreneurship, Competitiveness and Innovation, ex-Head of Department of ISQ for his public support of the MMST. Engº Jorge Gabriel is an expert in the domains of Entrepreneurship, Competitiveness and Innovation and, so, his opinion and feelings about the MMST are very valuable and representative.
«The value proposal of the Master in Management of Services and Technology (MMST) stresses the importance of the eduction of future business managers. I share with the MMST the interest in developing socially responsible entrepreneurs (in the international arena) that are sensitive to the advance of exponential technologies, being prepared to use them in global operations.
In fact, from the formal syllabus of the MMST one might conclude that the conerstones for educating these future managers are right there in topics such as Innovation Management, New Product Development, Entrepreneurship, Project Management and Capital Appraisal. In addition, the MMST offers visits to significant companies, as well as an important set of complementary seminars – e.g. in International Operations, in Normalisation and Standards in International Commerce, in Sustainability Practices in Business Management.
This type of education is absolutely relevant to develop students’ maturity, taking them a step forward from the fundamentals and core concepts that are taught in the programme courses and therefore preparing them to lead projects in a global world. Indeed, with more and more international trade agreements coming into place, such as the one between the European Union and the United States, i.e. The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), the Europe needs to have young graduates motivated and prepared to work within the scope of a huge number of opportunities coming from the expected multilateral economic growth that will start to materialise soon.
Finally, a word to congratulate the MMST leadership, namely Prof João Vilas-Boas, for the international recognition that the programme has already achieved, namely through two double degrees and several presentations of students’ work in EurOMA and in the Cambridge International Manufacturing Symposium (held at Cambridge University, in the United Kingdom). The 20th place in the EdUniversal ranking, among such tough competition, is something that has to be mentioned. And last, but not the least, the testimonies of graduates working for highly regarded organisations must also be acknowledged. I wish all the best to MMST!»
