Students from the Master in International Management Compete at the Global Management Challenge

Managining a company, even a virtual one, requires students to make decisions and know how to deal with the results obtained.

Iscte's International Management Masters students tested a previous version of the Global Management Challenge as a team. They will now have the opportunity to participate in the 2nd edition of the first round of the national competition, starting in November. The experience that took place this month involved more than 20 students of different nationalities and worked as an internal competition. This experience happened on the context of the course "Leadership Development, Decision Processes and Negotiation" of the Master in Human Resources Management and Organizational Consultancy at Iscte, which is a optional course for the Masters in Management and International Management.

Ana Margarida Passos, coordinator of the course, explains that this experience addresses the development of leaders and leadership, which is one of the key aspects for the success of organizations. “Leadership development is more effective with the use of case studies or management simulators. This simulator is extremely realistic and, in addition to stimulate the application of theoretical knowledge acquired in academic training, it allows students to understand the complexity of decision-making, the implication of decisions over time, working as a team and managing that same team. ”

For Álvaro Rosa, coordinator of the master's degree in International Management, the course and the competition require the participants to apply “the acquired knowledge and work in groups and under pressure. The sum of these vectors leads to a very interesting growth process in the individuals, in the group dynamics and in leadership skills”.

Jorge Gomes, Mariana Martins and Ricardo Alves are part of Team Four, which won this experience, and will be part of the national competition. “Decision making, combined with the management of the short time to do so, allowed us to develop a unique team work capacity. In a controlled environment, we were able to analyze problems, think of solutions, put them into practice and receive feedback on our actions, which allowed us to confront the impact of decisions, which is not always possible in the classroom ”, explains Jorge Gomes.

Mariana Martins believes that the national contest is more competitive: “We hope that the level of analysis and decisions will have to be more scrutinized and incisive.” And colleague Ricardo Alves adds that “GMC is a different learning moment than what we typically find in classes. Through this controlled exercise we expect to acquire skills to develop in a professional context ”.
