10th Responsible Management Education Research Conference
Sustainable and Responsible Management:
A decade of Integrating Knowledge and Creating Societal Impact through Innovation and Entrepreneurship
The 10th RMER Conference hosted by Iscte Business School is a forum intended to engage multiple stakeholders in a dialogue around Agenda 2030 and beyond and enhance further collaborations in responsible management education and research, and sustainable business practices to advance the SDGs.
This year marks the 10th, Jubilee anniversary of RMER Conferences. Across a decade of achievement, RMER Conferences have explored the complexities and global challenges involved in the transition to more sustainable production and consumption patterns. Different agents, including companies, nonprofits, governmental entities, organizations, consumers, and society at large, need to work together to effectively advance the 2030 Agenda and beyond. Through multidimensional and multidisciplinary dialogue and knowledge sharing among management educators in conversation with other stakeholders have advanced responsible management education and learning. As the challenge remains, further dialogue on how economic restructuring and social transformation on the journey to a more sustainable world is still needed.
The main goal of the global 10th RMER Conference is to bring together the responsible management education community and its stakeholders to drive societal impact through innovative and entrepreneurial ways that are grounded in the six PRME principles of purpose, values, method, research, dialogue and partnerships.
This continues the RMER tradition of holding inspirational, multidisciplinary and multicultural events that contribute to mutual sharing and learning among management educators and other stakeholders – all in service of creating positive societal impact through innovation and entrepreneurship.
Questions of special interest to be addressed include, but are not limited to, the following:
- What have we accomplished in the last decade of responsible management education? Where should we be heading?
- What are the implications of developing entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial capabilities for sustainable businesses, economic restructuring and societal transformation?
- How can management education and learning in social, economic and environmental responsibility transform and innovate organizations?
- How can we integrate knowledge and create impact through innovation and entrepreneurship?
- What strategies can be used for advancing responsible management education, research and learning?
- How can innovation and responsible entrepreneurship, including social entrepreneurship, be encouraged?
- How to help management educators and students cross disciplinary boundaries and engage with non-managerial disciplines to effectively deal with complex issues and challenges?
- How to foster dialogue and partnership with other individuals, groups, organizations and other stakeholders towards creating positive societal impact?
- How do business schools need to adapt educational approaches to tackle sustainability related business challenges?
We cordially invite you to participate in the debate about how diverse stakeholders can successfully engage, collaborate and partner towards achieving a more responsible management education for a better world.

Call for Contributions 10th RMER 2023 - new deadline (closed)
Please fill in the conference contribution submission form.
NEW DEADLINE: May 8th (closed)
This track aims to encourage empirical research, conceptual papers, cases, pedagogical examples and other forms of scholarship that triangulate/emphasize entrepreneurship and/or innovation for poverty alleviation. Note that there are two sub-tracks: (1) Impact-oriented research or (2) teaching and learning strategies. Paper contributions should indicate the most appropriate sub-track.
This track discusses about the role of circular economy in business administration and management programs curricula as well as the best ways for integrating them across study programs.
This topic aims for multidisciplinary studies that study, describe, or analyze any level of collective action for transformative movements. Papers should approach social change or innovation through collective action. This topic inquiries how collective action promotes transformative actions that can arise from communities, projects, social movements, organizations, and governments.
The aim of this track is to explore how emotional intelligence can be integrated into courses, modules and programs of business schools to prepare current and future leaders to contribute to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The track intends to discuss past and current practices as well as stories of success and failure, in order to further integration of emotional intelligence for sustainable development in business schools.
This track aims to push the entrepreneurship curriculum's barriers and advance the entrepreneurial education field by embracing and fostering futures skills and literacy. Additionally, this track will provide attendees with state-of-the-art insights into best practice examples on how to rethink current curricula and pedagogical methods.
This track aims to highlight the value of taking an interdisciplinary approach to climate education with a special focus on role-play and simulations.
This track aims to gather scholars and experiences concerning the development and implementation of micro-credentials for sustainable management education.
This track aims to explore and discuss the state of the art of research concerning micro-credentials for sustainable management education across institutional settings.
This track aims to explore what micro-foundation factors impact entrepreneurs on either taking a proactive and prosocial role in sustainability transitions or, on the contrary, resisting social change. This track aims also to attract contributions to share insights on the flourishing of sustainability and the flourishing of business from various disciplinary backgrounds.
The track aims to address the lack of data and knowledge about the representation of diversities and the implementation of inclusion programs within innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystems. The notion of a border as a boundary or barrier can extend beyond geographical contexts and include socio-cultural separations, linked to economic-demographic indicators. Women, African and Afrodescendent are underrepresented within social innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystems, at various levels: founders, investors and ecosystem’s enablers teams. The digital shift and the pervasive presence of platforms in the startup life cycle and venture pipeline support processes that drive business transformation and social innovation.
The track aims to address the main challenges and solutions identified by research and projects addressing the empowerment of social innovation and entrepreneurship across and beyond borders.
This track highlights studies, best practice, requirements, or examples on entrepreneurship in rural areas to impact these regions positively. According to the UN Sustainable Development Goals the track demonstrates that a responsible entrepreneurship by providing innovative solutions will contribute to economic prosperity, social justice, or environmental protection.
This track, convened by members of the PRME i5 Expert Pedagogy Group, showcases innovative examples of PRME i5 (Impactful 5) pedagogies applied in practice, ones that successfully engage with sustainability and responsible management by surfacing students' personal values, connecting with real world problems and that culminate in authentic assessments. Furthermore, we seek novel, creative and engaging approaches to presenting.
The track aims to address the implications, challenges and opportunities of social entrepreneurship for responsible management especially in a business context. Despite the recognised importance of the role of social entre- and intrapreneurship for transformation for sustainable development, only few scholars have investigated key questions regarding how and why social entrepreneurship happens and what the specific capabilities of social entrepreneurs are.
This track aims to stimulate knowledge sharing between scholars and practitioners of different fields, for a better understanding on the educational, economic and socio-cultural challenges ahead. It presents an opportunity to increase research impact, by providing expert feedback, connecting theory with practice, and fertilizing interdisciplinary collaboration for moving forward on SDGs achievement.
This track aims to provide a meeting point for discussion on the challenges, opportunities, difficulties, strategies, and best practices of business education for fulfilling the changing demands of the corporate world in the Iberian context and beyond.
This track aims to receive submissions in various areas that directly or indirectly relate to the main conference theme or different issues, challenges, opportunities and solutions that are connected with the advancement of the SDGs, sustainable development, societal impact and the role of entrepreneurship and innovation, as well as with the new approaches to and practices of responsible leadership education that are needed for the changemakers of tomorrow.
Conceptual or empirical research papers, along with works in progress and/or proposals for innovative research designs that lead to new insights or challenge established frameworks about the issues involved are highly welcome for this track, as well as case studies illustrating creative solutions and innovative practices in business, management education, policy-making and/or the respective partnerships among different stakeholders.
Depending on the paper submission concentration, the accepted papers for the General Track might be grouped into different thematically focused sub-tracks.

Discover the PRME 'Impactful Five' (i5) Program—an ambitious project fostering responsible leaders through collaborative, meaningful, and playful learning strategies. Developed by the LEGO Foundation, the i5 Program distils 5 essential qualities for creating profound learning experiences: joy, social interaction, engagement, meaningful experiences, and iteration. Through a partnership with Project Zero at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and Sulitest, PRME translated the Lego Foundation’s research into pedagogical practices for the business school setting. These findings are shared in the PRME i5 Playbook, which showcases concrete methods for applying i5 pedagogies in the classroom.
In this workshop, you will take a deep dive into the PRME i5 Playbook with members of i5 Team Europe – experts who pioneered the i5 Playbook's development. The workshop will share the extensive pedagogical research behind the program, inspiring examples of how i5 is implemented globally and tap into the diverse experiences of participants.
Participation in this workshop grants access to forthcoming mentoring and development opportunities within the i5 Literacy Certification Scheme —an advanced series culminating in a certification, validating your expertise in employing i5 methodologies.

** Cross-Regional Chapter/ Cross-Working Group Session
Margaret Goralski, Liz Collier, Milenko Gudic and Al Rosenbloom
Innovation and entrepreneurship are taught universally across all business schools and are often seen as two central mindsets for achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs). It’s now certain that tackling the SDGs requires multidisciplinary and multidimensional knowledge sharing and dialogue across a whole range of societal and educational actors. This cross PRME regional chapter/cross PRME working group track attempts to mirror the multidimensional and multidisciplinary discussions needed to develop SDG-ready business students. By bringing together chapters, perhaps thought of as vertical organized entities, and working groups, perhaps thought of as horizontal entities because their topic focus can cut across regions, this track will foster discussion at the intersection of these groups. Designed to be interactive and engaging, the track’s goal is to develop collaborations that produce results. Specific outcomes will be driven by the number of regional chapter and working group chairs/representatives present. Historically, RMER has held sessions such as this. Participant response has been enthusiastic.
*** Wicked Festival
Tay Keong Tan, Paul Hanstedt, Rachel Sharrett, and Maja Anderson
‘Wicked problems’ are persistent challenges that defy resolution, generally seen as complex and open-ended (Rittel & Webber, 1973). Unlike “tame” problems with ready-made or tested solutions, wicked problems lack clarity in their definition and their solutions are often strongly contested, risky, and subject to many real-world constraints (such as extreme poverty, pandemics, refugees, and terrorism). Most of the world’s crises highlighted in the Sustainable Development Goals are wicked problems.
In the first of the two parallel sessions, Radford University graduate and undergraduate students will present the outcomes of their research on four unsolved wicked problems and their solutions to them. They will demonstrate how students in higher education, with guidance and mentoring from faculty members, can tackle complex, multi-dimensional public problems, develop workable solutions, and present and defend their work at academic meetings, such as this conference (Bentley & Toth, 2020)
The second parallel session will discuss the conceptual underpinnings and pedagogical objectives of incorporating the teaching of solving wicked problems in universities and colleges (Hanstedt, 2018), and the implications for management education and the advancements of the SDGs. In this session, two professors and two graduate students will discuss the strategies for empowering students to solve real-world, complex problems and lessons learned from the practice at Radford University and around the world.
**** Students' engagement for sustainability at Higher Education institutions: The PRME UN Global Ambassadors Program
Anna-Theresia Krein
Student engagement is and remains one of the paramount purposes of advancing higher education institutions. During this sessions six students will present the PRME UN Global Ambassadors Program as well as their individual projects/work which originates in the program.
