Accounting

Director: Professor Isabel Lourenço

The Department of Accounting is one of six departments that integrate Iscte Business School, offering high scientific and professional training, at the level of different study cycles (Bachelor, Master or Doctoral), through a high standard and reputable academic staff at both national and international level. This Department offers a diversified range of curricular units, optional and compulsory, specialised in the area of Accounting, which are included in the different programmes offered by the School.

The faculty staff presently comprises twenty-nine members, most of them in a full-time basis. Among these professors, many have PhDs from prestigious European and North American universities, which provides our students with access to various sources of high-quality knowledge. In addition, there is a body of visiting professors with management positions in important companies and national institutions, as well as prestigious professionals in the areas of auditing and taxation, which has allowed a greater and better interaction between the teaching activity and the business reality, not only in the Department but also in the whole Iscte Business School environment. The authorship of numerous books should also be highlighted, many of which are reference manuals in Portugal, both at a teaching and professional level. This clearly portrays the pedagogic quality of the Department's academic staff.

Besides the notoriety of the Department at a pedagogical level, research at an international level has assumed growing importance in the activities of its faculty members. As a result, they have strongly contributed to the publication of articles in the best international journals in the area of Accounting, such as the European Accounting Review, Journal of Business Ethics, Management Accounting Research, Accounting, Organizations and Society, Abacus, Accounting and Business Research, Accounting, Auditing and Accountability Journal, among many others.

Additionally, Accounting Research Seminars are periodically held, in which prestigious international academics in the field have been invited to discuss their latest research work. In 2011, the 8th European Network for Research in Organizational and Accounting Change (ENROAC) Conference was organised in association with Manchester Business School (UK) and Exeter Business School (UK).

Economics

Director: Professor Joaquim José Ramalho

The Department of Economics is an academic unit of Iscte. It is one of the six departments of the Iscte Business School, one of the most prestigious management and economics schools in Portugal.

The Department of Economics currently includes 22 faculty members. Of these, 15 are full-time staff with PhD degrees. The remaining 7 are visiting scholars, with high prestige careers developed in important private and public companies, as well as in Public Administration, including participation in governing functions. This range of lecturers – strongly committed to their own teaching and research activities and studious of the applied reality of the Portuguese and international economy – is one of our most significant value added. This group of lecturers is strongly motivated, dynamic and committed to actively contribute to society by training students and disseminating the results of their research activities.

The Department has scientific responsibility for several education programmes, including the BSc in Economics, the MSc in Economics, the MSc in Business Economics and Competition and the PhD in Economics (the latter managed by BRU-IUL). All of them were designed and are regularly updated to ensure they follow the best international standards. Aiming to be in line with the trend observed in the international context, the MSc in Economics and the PhD in Economics are fully taught in English as well as several courses in the BSc in Economics. In turn, the MSc in Business Economics and Competition meets a training need, of a more specialised nature, in one of the most important areas of applied economics.

Also within the field of education, we assume a central concern with the teaching quality and cultivate a spirit of proximity between teachers and students, aiming to stimulate open debate and to promote a more fruitful learning process.

Beyond excellence in teaching, we also aspire excellence in research. In this regard, we are guided by the highest international standards. In association with the Business Research Unit (BRU), a research center funded by FCT under which the Doctoral faculty of the department develop their research activities, we focus on scientific merit, particularly encouraging the publication in top international journals (ISI/SCOPUS). This strategy has led to an enormous growth in the research output conducted by the faculty members of the Department, allowing it to currently be in a high profile position within the national universities context.

Considering the past experience and accumulated knowledge, the present that we are proud of, the continuous willingness to evolve, and the solid commitment to the academic excellence, the Department of Economics aims and actively works to build an even better future.

Come create it with us!

Finance

Director: Professor José Carlos Dias

The Department of Finance and Accounting was created in 2001, at the heart of Iscte Business School, and represents the first case of autonomy of these areas at department level in Portugal. Thus, the development of these areas within Iscte was institutionally consecrated – and, for more than two decades, they have been affirmed by the innovation and modernity of its courses and subjects, as well as the reputation of its faculty.

In the teaching activities of Iscte Business School, this Department provides a specialisation in Finance and Accounting across all levels of higher education: undergraduate, Masters and Doctoral. It thus ensures a unique specialisation offer in Portuguese universities, which extends to a wide range of subjects, both compulsory and optional, duly integrated in the School's different programmes.

The Department has 22 lecturers, most of whom are full time. Among the professors there is a valuable international component, based on PhDs from prestigious American and European universities. Besides, there is a body of visiting professors with management positions in important companies and national institutions, as well as prestigious professionals in the areas of auditing and taxation, which has allowed a greater and better interaction between the teaching activity and the business reality, not only in the Department but also in the whole Iscte Business School. The authorship of numerous books should also be highlighted, many of which are reference manuals in Portugal, both at a teaching and professional level. This clearly portrays the pedagogic quality of the Department's academic staff.

Research also plays a major role in the Department's activities. Its professors have been writing publications in the best international scientific journals. Regularly, seminars are organised for the presentation and discussion of research work. These are usually attended by renowned international academics, who bring a major contribute to the learning experience of our students. We also host the only international scientific conference in the area of Finance in Portugal, which takes place annually - the Annual Conference of Iscte Business School in Finance.

In study-related matters, the main financial databases are made available to our members, which naturally facilitates the development of research work.

Marketing, Operations and General Management

Director: Professor Pedro Dionísio

The current Department of Marketing, Operations and General Management arose from the transformation of the Department of Management Sciences in 2010. This was one of the pillars of Iscte - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, since its foundation in 1972, assuming the supervision of the whole Management studies area in Iscte for almost three decades, thus being the predecessor of the Management School.

It currently covers three main areas of knowledge: Marketing, Operations and General Management. In these areas, it develops an intense teaching activity with direct responsibility in the implementation of Bachelor, Master and Doctoral programmes within the School, seeking to contribute with educational products that professionally valorise the competences and management skills of its participants. This is achieved through a very strong interaction between state-of-the-art science and an effective connection with the business and corporate reality. The Department has around 53 faculty members, harmoniously combining scientific qualifications (more than 26 PhDs), with the existence of guest lecturers who perform relevant business functions, and thus ensure a more effective business-university connection.
