Objectives
Economics studies how to make optimal decisions taking constraints into account and adequately weighing the costs and benefits involved. Students will develop strong quantitative skills and learn to apply them in various settings, particularly in:
1) Microeconomics, which deals with problems at an individual level, such as the pricing of goods by firms and consumer behaviour of households. It also covers market structure, economic welfare and imperfect information. Microeconomics also deals with the effects of public policies (such as subsidies, taxation and legislation) on individual behaviour.
2) Macroeconomics, which deals with problems at an aggregate level, such as national income fluctuations, unemployment and inflation. Macroeconomics also deals with the effects of public policies (such as government spending and the setting of interest rates) on national economies.
3) Econometrics, which deals with the application of statistical methods to economic data, allowing one to test different theories and develop models that can be used for analysis or forecasting.
Students will also study more specialized topics (such as International Economics, Monetary Economics, and Finance) and in other related areas (such as Accounting, Management, Computation, and Law).
Students will develop critical thinking, analytical skills, communication and collaboration skills. The undergraduate in Economics at ISCTE will prepare students to deal with the future professional challenges they may face.
