João Leão is the new Minister of State and Finance of the Portuguese government. Mário Centeno's successor is 46 years old and has a remarkable academic career. Until now, he was Secretary of State for Budget.
Professor of Economics at Iscte since 2008, he was also president of the Scientific Committee of the Department of Economics, between 2009 and 2010, and director of the PhD in Economics (2011-2012), being a researcher at the Business Research Unit (BRU).
Portugal's new Minister of State and Finance holds a PhD in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in the United States. Before being Secretary of State and now minister, he was director of the Research Office of the Ministry of Economy, between 2010 and 2014, and advisor to the Deputy Secretary of State for Industry and Development, between 2009 and 2010.
He was also a member of the Economic and Social Council between 2010 and 2014 and of the Superior Statistical Council between 2010 and 2014. He was a member of the Portuguese delegation in the OECD Economic Policy Committee in 2010 and 2012 and integrated working groups within the OECD.
The new Minister of State and Finance takes office on June 15, at 10 am.
