Aparas de Madeira (Wood chips) - Tourist product design

On the small island of Corvo we meet an entrepreneur who specialises in woodworking and who is keeping alive an ancient Azorean tradition: wooden locks.

To offer a unique and authentic experience and to promote and commercialise this project, Stark collaborated with David in a series of co-design workshops to create a series of tourist experiences.

Tourism product design

The ANCORAS association is a non-profit organisation based in Oeiras, Lisbon, dedicated to preserving and promoting Portugal's rich maritime heritage through cultural and tourist activities. It seeks to keep the country's maritime traditions alive through educational, cultural and tourist programmes centred on the iconic Tagus Canoe and Latin sailing. At the centre of its sailing experiences is the ‘Alma do Tejo’, a traditional Tagus canoe equipped with a Latin sail.

Through co-design sessions, Spark worked together with the association to create tourist products that not only publicise this heritage but also contribute to the return on investment in restoring these vessels. In this way, the association will be able to restore more boats and keep this heritage alive.

1. Development of Industrial Tourism

The Lisbon region has a rich industrial heritage. Its under-utilisation as a tourist product means a loss of opportunity to disperse tourists visiting the capital.

This co-design project seeks to identify strategies for publicising and attracting tourists to the various industrial tourism units in the Lisbon region.

2. Reducing the negative perception of locals in the face of overtourism

The Lisbon region is experiencing a problem common to other successful tourist destinations: overtourism. This has generated growing negative sentiment towards tourism in Lisbon. On the other hand, tourism has played a leading role in the economic development of the region (and the country).

This co-design project seeks to identify strategies to mitigate this negative sentiment by conveying information about the sector's relevance.
